From baby rattles to bicycles

Babies are weird and wonderful creatures … but often, they are just plain weird! It can be completely unnerving trying to figure out why they ignore mirrors, balls, and television … but are fascinated by a piece of cellophane or patterned cloth. They become more understandable as they get older, but if you want to avoid a lot of wasted toys and baby dollars, it’s best to understand age-appropriate toy theory from a young age. For babies, toys are more than just a way to pass time, since they don’t have to do the dishes or work; They are vital for the development of intelligence and a sense of self. Here we created a baby toy ages and stages guide to demystify the whole process.

Toys for babies from 0 to 3 months.

At this stage, a baby’s best toy is really his parents! They don’t have a lot of grip or fine motor skills to speak of, so your participation in their game is vital. However, you can help that development along with the tools:

• Mobiles: For those times when you go to sleep or just wake up, a mobile on the side of the crib is a great thing to have. Mobiles promote pattern recognition, hand-eye coordination, and a sense of “object permanence.” The best thing is a toy mobile that plays music.

• Music: Both ordinary CDs for adults and music for children and toys that play their own songs are great for building neural pathways at this age.

• Contrasting and Colorful Items: Items in high contrast colors or black and white get a lot of time to look at!

• Nursing collars – Many babies (including mine!) Love to pinch Mom’s or Dad’s breast and neck while feeding. A nursing collar is a great alternative toy to clavicle skin …

• Mirrors: The developmental stage of the mirror comes at a different time for all babies, starting now.
