Considering the size of the machine and the amount of laser power it puts out, the Atomstack Laser machine can be very capable at cutting large-scale projects. It can easily handle thick wood, acrylic and other materials. In fact, I was able to successfully engrave a piece of 3mm black plexi glass without any issues. Of course, I always recommend that you use proper safety goggles when using any laser for any length of time to protect your eyes from any possible damage.

In terms of setup, the laser comes with an easy-to-follow manual which makes it very simple to assemble. It takes less than half an hour to get everything up and running. The build quality is also very good. It’s made of durable aluminum alloys that give it a premium look. There are also precise scale lines on both the X- and Y-axis to facilitate quick and easy length measurement. The control panel is also quite nice with a high-resolution display and quality buttons. It has all of the controls that you need to run a job, jog or home the machine, adjust power and speed, etc. It even has a solid metal mushroom-style emergency stop button which is great to have if you need to shut off the machine quickly.

Another feature that is great for any CNC laser engraver is the ability to work with different file formats. With this, you can create your own vector designs and graphics as well as work with existing bitmap (photographic) images. Of course, if you’re an experienced user, you can also import and etch directly from files saved on your computer or in software like CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator.

The machine can also be used with various open source software like LaserGRBL, LightBurn and Benbox. This makes it very versatile, and you can customize it to fit your specific needs. It’s compatible with Windows and OSMAC systems and supports a variety of popular file formats.

It has a total of two NEMA 17 stepper motors that independently drive the X and Y axes. It also features limit switches on the X and Y axis that help you home the laser head. This is a handy feature to have especially if you’re doing repeat jobs since it helps the machine find its starting point automatically.

The laser is also equipped with an air assist system that reduces charring on the material and keeps the beam focused. This is a necessary feature for high-powered machines and it’s nice to see that Atomstack included this in their machine. The compressor is a nice design and has a variable air flow, so you can control the amount of air that’s pushed through to the laser module. This feature can be turned on and off as needed. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that the laser can be operated without being connected to a computer. This is a very useful feature when working in a tight space where you don’t have great ventilation.
