It is often necessary because of defects from incorrect component placement or bad solder joints, or electrical problems due to high voltage current exposure. Other reasons include a lack of proper thermal management or high physical stress from flexing or vibration.

Reworking can be done by a variety of techniques, including hot air and infrared.
