Dos and Don’ts in Pest Control
Pests aren’t just a nuisance; They can also threaten to cause health problems for loved ones in your home. If not properly controlled at an early stage, pests can spread, making their removal at a later time extremely difficult.
There are several effective pest control treatments available on the market. However, if results are not achieved through conventional treatment options, it is time to reevaluate your strategy. It is also critical to note that many of the pesticides used to eliminate pests from homes can be dangerous when overused or applied incorrectly.
The following are some of the dos and don’ts to help you maximize your efforts to protect your home from pests.
“Behind”
Pest prevention is your best option.
Pests enter the home when there are opportunities to do so. By minimizing the situations they take advantage of, you are minimizing the chance of having a pest problem to begin with.
Eliminate food sources – For example, store food in sealed plastic or glass containers; Trash containing food scraps should be placed in well-covered trash cans and be sure to regularly remove trash from your home.
Eliminate sources of water – Be careful of water that collects anywhere in the house. Look for any sources of water, such as collection trays under houseplant containers or pet water left outside overnight.
Remove sources of entry and shelter – Get rid of the clutter created by things like stacks of newspapers, magazines, or cardboard that provide places to breed and hide. Close places where they can get in and hide. For example, caulk cracks and crevices around cabinets or baseboards, use steel wool to fill spaces around pipes, and cover holes with wire mesh.
Use pesticides safely and correctly – Since pesticides can be dangerous, read and follow pesticide label directions and safety warnings, keep pets and children away from areas where pesticides have been applied, and only apply chemicals approved for use in home.
Since the containers themselves and leftovers can be a hazard, be sure to properly dispose of leftover pesticides and their containers.
“Not to do”
Following the pest control recommendations above will keep you and your family safe and on the right track. The following “no’s” may seem obvious, but they are worth repeating.
Follow the label regarding “indoor” and “outdoor” use. – Many chemicals intended for outdoor use are dangerous for indoor use. Chemicals intended for outdoor use remain toxic longer indoors than outdoors.
Don’t assume that “more” is better. – Always read and follow label instructions. Just as using indoor outdoor chemicals is dangerous, so is using too much pesticide.
Do not transfer pesticides to other containers – Store pesticides in their original containers. Chemicals transferred to other containers, especially reused food or beverage containers, are known to cause accidental poisonings.
