How to remove hair dye from bathrooms and bathroom tiles

If you’ve recently dyed your hair and unfortunately managed to get some dye on your bathroom tile or bathtub, there are several things you can try to remove it.

Before you begin, you need to remember that you don’t want to remove any of the glaze from your tile veneer. Porcelain and ceramic tile often have a high gloss finish that you don’t want to damage. If you do, your tiles will look matted and worn. You can also scratch them.

Also, be sure to test patch a small area in an invisible or imperceptible tile. (Even better, use a replacement tile that’s not on your bathroom wall — at Builder Superstore we recommend adding 10% to your order on top to cover spares, breaks, and replacements.)

-If you can, clean as much of the hair dye off the bathroom tile or bathtub as soon as it occurs. Spray with hairspray and clean.

-If you have hair dye stains in your bathroom, fill it with water and bleach, and let it soak overnight. (Be sure to keep the area well ventilated.)

-You can buy specialized products like Scrubbing Bubbles (used in many salons) or Magic Eraser. (Be sure to do test patches.)

-If you have marble tiles in your bathroom, you can use alcohol to remove them.

-Peroxide gel or a bleaching pen can also be used to remove hair dye from porcelain or ceramic tile.

-You can also buy (at a high cost) a color remover at a hairdresser. This is used to remove dye from hair, so it can work on tiles as well.

-Cigarette ash mixed with a little water has also been cited as a useful method of removing stain from tiles.

– If you have hair dye in the tile grout, you can easily re-grout it on top. Be sure to also seal the grout to ensure it is waterproof.

-DO NOT USE LEMON JUICE.

Still, be sure to seek professional advice, do test patches, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
