The difference between Edge-Lit and Backlit

The introduction of LED TVs to the market raised many questions about the technology used and the benefits of using this type of HDTV. Many people don’t understand how the new HDTV works and how they can benefit from it. Due to this fact, many people do not appreciate the new technology and do not even bother to know the important facts regarding these televisions.

LED TVs are LCD televisions that use LEDs or light-emitting diodes as their backlight instead of cold cathode fluorescent lamps or CCFLs. LEDs are smaller than fluorescent panels, making TVs more energy efficient. There are two varieties of LEDs: full-array or backlit and edge-mounted. Backlit TVs use many LED segments that are placed on the back of the LCD panel. Each LED can be turned on and off individually to produce high contrast and dynamic ratios and crystal clear images. This local dimming can produce rich, deep blacks so users can enjoy true high definition that LCD TV users cannot.

Edge-lit, on the other hand, is the type of backlight where the LEDs are located along the edges of the panel. Light is scattered and directed towards the center of the screen, making black levels not as deep as those of the backlight. The benefit of having an edge-lit TV is that it is lighter in weight because the panels used are thinner and only sit on the sides. This type of LED TV is also slimmer as compared to the backlit TV which gives it a very stylish exterior.
