Birch or oak flooring?

Birch hardwood flooring has always been a popular choice due to the fact that it is cheaper than oak, but it is still a sturdy hardwood floor with a wide variety of natural colors. It’s worth looking at some birch flooring photos online so you know what I mean. As you can see, it is very different from oak floors, however, both floors are the most popular solid woods sold today.

I think it is a trade-off. Just quote on the product. Oak is strong and durable, but more expensive. Birch is a cheap flooring, which just isn’t as strong (or beautiful) as oak. People choose it for its price. Maple would be a better choice for a lightweight floor over birch as it is more stable and stronger, but it doesn’t sell as much volume. And that means it just comes down to price.

Of course, now that multi-layer and engineered flooring are becoming increasingly popular, oak flooring has become even less expensive. But engineered birch flooring would also make cheap hardwood flooring if it only hit the hardwood floor in good volume. But as it stands, it is still a niche and therefore a very expensive product. And if that’s not weird enough, due to the lower volumes, this lower-grade engineered lumber is considerably less expensive than its rival in oak flooring.

A good idea of how a lower quality product can become more expensive due to volume. I’d say buy the oak any day. And if you really like sturdy yet lightweight flooring, buy some maple.
