Les Miserables movie review

Being “in the friend zone” is one of the greatest fears of the “millennials” today. This is prominently displayed on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Although the Les Miserables movie was released in 2012, most of us were able to relate to the character of Eponine, who became a martyr when it comes to her love for Marius. The story took place in France, mainly in the city of Paris, during the Restoration period around 1800. The film is derived from a French historical novel bearing the same name as the film. The title can be translated to “Les miserables” and for this; shows that the movie is not a wonderful book because it shows the darkest past of the French Revolution.

The film will take us to the lives of people who were not entirely recognizable by history. As stated above, this is a movie that shows a dark history: the negative side of the French Revolution. Since there was a war that happened back then, innocent people were greatly affected by it. It will lead us to the lives of criminals, prostitutes, phonies, name it. Clearly, they all do this to get out of poverty, to be able to feed themselves and survive their daily lives. This movie doesn’t just focus on the history of the French Revolution. Rather, there are many side stories. One of which is a love triangle that is taking place between three young people. Marius, a young man who has ardent desires for a young woman named Cosette, who turns out to have the same interest in the young man. Eponine, on the other hand, sees Marius as the apple of her eye, but the feelings were unrequited and she remained a one-sided love. However, even though she knows that Marius cannot love her as his lover, she still settled for friendship and I adore her for that.

I think one of the factors why Marius did not give the opportunity to love Eponine is because they are not on the same level in the social hierarchy, since he is from a wealthy family, while Eponine is not. The book from which the film was taken was written about 155 years ago, which shows the presence of this perception, and yet social discrimination still prevails at this time. There was a case where Marius pays Eponine a favor, but she declines the money that is given to her. Although she declined the offer, she was blinded by her love for Marius and still did him a favor.

The whole experience of watching the movie is great. It was very informative, but not like the cliches that are often boring. The idea of making a history movie with a few side stories is a brilliant idea to encourage young adults like me to learn about history. The casting is perfect, the edits super fine and the songs perfect and they gave the film its identity. The actors were very effective because they were able to convey the emotions and affect the viewers. Overall, I think this historical film is one of the classics when it comes to musicals.
